Radiofrequency ablation of thyroid nodules

Patient’s suffering from growing symptomatic benign nodules really had no other alternative treatment than surgery.  But now things have changed.  A new minimally invasive procedure called Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA) of Benign Thyroid Nodules is now available at Austin Thyroid and Parathyroid Surgeons.  RFA is a non-surgical treatment option is performed in their office under local anesthesia.  As leaders in their surgical field, Drs. John Sabra and Bridget Brady are the first surgeons in the State of Texas to offer and perform this in-office procedure.

Although the covid19 pandemic put the breaks on elective procedures in the state of Texas, Drs John Sabra and Bridget Brady are now once again accepting patients for Radiofrequency Ablation.  They understand that due to the ongoing covid pandemic, patients are more comfortable going into an office rather than a hospital for treatment.

With the state of Texas opening up non-elective procedures, they once again are performing Radiofrequency Ablation in their clinic.  About a week ago, Dr. John Sabra successfully treated with Radiofrequency ablation a 42 year old woman whose thyroid nodule on her left side had been growing for the last couple of years.  The woman had begun to have major discomfort in her neck as well as dealing with pressure symptoms.  As required, Dr. Sabra performed an ultrasound guided fine needle aspiration biopsy to confirm the nodule was benign.  Once the results came back, she was scheduled for her ultrasound guided Radiofrequency Ablation of her thyroid nodule procedure.

When the patient came in, Dr. Sabra performed a preliminary thyroid ultrasound scan of the neck to measure her thyroid nodule.  He then proceeded to numb the neck area and then to hydrodissect the thyroid capsule, so the patient would not feel any pain during the procedure.  Throughout this whole time, the patient was awake and Dr. Sabra made sure to see how the patient was feeling.  The procedure lasted about 30 mins and the patient was satisfied when it was done.
